Abstract: This past summer, Women in Animation launched a special online program celebrating the thesis and final films from Class of 2020 students who couldn’t screen works, attend career fairs, or otherwise celebrate graduation due to COVID-19. The Class of 2020 was heavily affected by the pandemic; traditional year-end festivities, from in-person commencement ceremonies to screening celebrations and recruiting events, were all canceled. The Women in Animation Class of 2020 Showcase is WIA’s effort to virtually recreate some of the opportunities that upcoming talent unfortunately missed out on. In addition to holding a juried animated short film competition, WIA provided a digital platform for films to be seen by animation powerhouses and recruiters, hiring managers, agents, and studio executives, making important connections for promising new talent. A total of 409 graduate and undergraduate student films representing 121 schools from all over the world were reviewed by the WIA Class of 2020 Showcase jury of 16 top industry professionals to determine the winners. This past September, WIA announced the judges’ six top Showcase films – three winners and three honorable mentions. With WIA’s encouragement and support, SIGGRAPH Asia 2020 Computer Animation Festival was able to bring together five of those great films, including special messages from the filmmakers, for you to enjoy in a special screening!
